April 5, 2007
Tuft took his first steps yesterday April 4, 2007. WOW!!! He did awesome. Justin was told by his Dr. that his left leg was now able to hold his body weight. He was so HAPPY. Yesterday in therapy they had him stand with the help of new equipment. He was able to stand for about 15 min. all by himself. He loved every minute. Then they had him stand with a walker, and with the help of two therapist he was able to take about 10-12 steps. He sat down for a minute, but he wanted to do more. So up he went again. He did the same thing again. It is going to take awhile for this legs to get strong and move how they should, but he will do it. I told him it was "Mind over Matter" or he told me. Today he told me he was going to show me how he could get out of bed by himself, well he almost did it!! I knew I couldn't get him off the floor so I had to make him stop. It's only a matter of time. He has a great attitude, he helps us to keep one everyday. He has all the other patients cheering him on as he goes. He is so amazing, everyday day I tell him that, and how much he is loved by so very many people. I couldn't ask for a better brother. He sure keeps us going. Remember make everyday a positive one, because Tuft sure does. About Medicaid, it is cutting off all physical therapy as of April 10th. However, they said we the family would be allowed to pay for anymore we wanted to have done. Kolob Care & Rehab. said they would continue to work with Justin everyday if we were able to do that. So of course we said YES. Justin is going to have therapy 5 times a week for about 1 hour until he walks on out of there! So many of you have been SO generous already to help out with Justin, we could still use a little help to make sure he gets all the therapy he needs. We were told it runs about $1 a minute. It could take 4 to 5 months to get him strong. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Tuft is so determined to walk, he wants to go home so badly. It's only a matter of time. He has such a great spirit about him. Anyone who would like to stop by and see him, please feel free to do so. He LOVES it! Thanks again so much. I can't name all of you out there, but Thanks for all the love and support. We couldn't have done it without you!!!

Dear Justin and Family,
I an so happy to hear of Justin's progress. Good job Justin on your first steps. It takes alot of effort and determination to get back on your feet after what you have been thru. Just keep up the therapy, even if Medicaid cuts off the physical therapy. Justin's determination to walk again will be his great motivation. My son was determined to walk again after his accident 4 years ago, and he was going to do whatever it took. His best therapy for his legs, to rebuild all the muscle, was a stationary bike. He started with only being able to ride for a few minutes, he soon worked up to riding it for 2 to 3 hours. He had both his femur in his left leg severly broken, and his lower right tibia with a compound fracture, plus numerous other broken bones. He is living proof that will and determination can get you to where you want to be. Just keep up the good, but hard work. You have come such a long way in the past few months. I am so happy to know all our prayers are being answered. I have keep you in my prayers daily since I heard of you accident. Having been a mother who has gone thru a simular experience, I know the excitement that come with seeing miracles happen. May God continue to bless you in all your efforts Justin. You have an amazing family and support group to help you thru this time.
Happy Easter,
Karen Martinez (Las Vegas)
